Number 3

Wow! You would not believe the difference. By the time it was over, he had knocked out my four front teeth and made my workplace a drive thru. I worked in a nursing home, so it wasn’t a good thing!

We’ll call him…

Mistake #1.

I don’t remember how I met him, but I remember our first date.

He knocked on the door of my friends house. I was staying with them at the time. As I went to answer the door, their friend decided he was going to leave.

I opened the door and their friend walked out, I greeted him and he said, “Who the hell was that?”

“A friend of theirs.” I said, stepping out the door.

“If we are going to see each other, you can’t be seeing other men.” he said.

I should have turned around and went right back in the house.

“Okay.” I said and continued down the walk.

I got in the drivers side of my truck. Yeah. He didn’t have a vehicle.

“I’m serious.” he said.

“I’m sure you are.” I said, waiting for him to close the passenger door.

“If you’re going to see other men, I need to know so I can leave right now.” he said.

“Look, I said okay. What more you do you want?” I said.

“Fine. Let’s go to the bar.” he said. “I want to play pool.”

I should have got out of the truck and went back in the house.

I drove us to the bar and sat there, bored all night, watching him play pool with his friends.

A few days later, you’ll never guess what he did. You guessed it!

“I know you’re cheating on me.” he said.

We were watching tv.

“Am I having a good time?” I said.

I didn’t think he was serious.

“Do you care about me at all?” he said, getting up from the couch. “I just told you I know you’re cheating on me and you didn’t even deny it!”

“It doesn’t matter if I deny it or not, you’ve already made up your mind.” I said. “Hell, you’ve already judged me guilty.”

“I’m leaving.” he said.

He left for two days, then he came back and apologized.

I took him back.

A week later, we had the same discussion. This time it turned violent and we both had bruises. I have no fear.

Three weeks after that, we repeated the same performance. For the next year, it became a weekly thing.

Then, valentines day rolled around. I made a romantic dinner, sent the kids to the sitter and waited.

He came in after work. He took a shower. He looked at the table and said, “I have to go to my girlfriends house. She’s 16 and pregnant and needs me more than you do.”

A couple of months later, he found my truck parked in the parking lot of my work and drove it through the front doors.
